Upgrading Wordpress

Article Last Updated : 22 January 2010 @ 22:27 by Adrian

Wordpress has launched many new patch on their Free Open-Sourced Content Management System (CMS) and yet sometimes you find it hard to Upgrade it when you see the available updates showing when you login into the CMS.

Having problems with Automatic Upgrade function on WordPress?

Anything before the 2.8.5 version, “Upgrade Automatically” is always working perfectly, until they started with 2.9, where the most prominent improvements are focused on Image management. No doubt, the CMS loads faster too and also the Plugins upgrading can be done in bulk. So this is what happened to me, just sharing my experience.

Every time after clicking the Update link, it doesn’t go on smoothly. Displaying a few lines of messages saying unpacking ……………….zip and it halted. Displaying no error message but the process just stopped, that’s the hassle it gave me. Not able to figure out what is the problem.

Pressing the refresh button doesn’t really help. My first encounter was when on a vacation to Ledang and experienced quite a slow Internet speed, so I presumed it was caused by the slow speed. But when I came back to KL, it’s the same, even when I installed manually that for my client via FTP, it has some difficulties in doing that.

I even tried manual installation of Wordpress into the website and thank god it works. After some tweaks, I found out. Just do the following, you would be able to update your wordpress to the latest version.

1. Get into your admin page (domain.com/wp-admin)
2. Click on Plugins on your left navigation panel
3. Disable all plugins by hitting the “Deactivate” link
(Note: If you are running Wordpress 2.9 and wanting to upgrade to 2.9.1, then, select all the checkbox for your plugins, and under the Drop Down Bulk Action menu, select DEACTIVATE)
4. Click on Dashboard and now you will still notice the upgrade prompt on the top region of your screen, now, perform the automatic upgrade.

Remarks:
This only occurs when you host your blog on your own domain. Free Wordpress Blogs are all automatically upgraded when the latest version is released.
