Note : Skype Lite has been discontinued by Skype, read here for more information.

Skype

Skype (pronounced /ˈskaɪp/) is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and, in some countries, to free-of-charge numbers, are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.

Over the years, businessmen have been dealing with clients with skype as it is secured and user friendly. Smooth flow of the application has also marked an advantage to it. Transferring Files, Video Calling, Voice Calling, Calling to Landline.. All these features have been improving all these years and I personally find the video and voice calling is much better compared to other Instant Messaging provider like AOL, Google, Windows Live, Yahoo and etc.

Nevertheless, in January 2009 this year Skype Lite was launched for beta and much feedbacks were received from users. Their target was to Android phones. Nevertheless, it is available for Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson phones. Although it does not 100% supports all the phone versions, like the P1i, it has not been listed until now. Yet, you might be able to use the application for G700 (3G Touch Screen Smart UQI Phone too, just like P1i). I am using a P1i and the iSkoot for Skype that comes with it is not actually that good in sense of interface compared to this Skype Lite.

So yeah, grab one now. All you need is just a Skype ID, log in, and there you go. Start skyping anywhere.. anytime.

Let’s see how do you get started. You can either use the website of Skype to sent a download link via SMS do your mobile phone, which is something like this. (see screenshot below) – http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/skypelite/

When you are downloading from your cell, there are many version that you can choose based on your cell-phone manufacturer. Files formats includes: .sisx (nokia symbian), .cab (windows mobile), .jar / .jad (devices that support MIDlet suites – SE, Samsung and others). Not all the models are listed but if you want to try out with phones which are not listed, choose the model closest to your phone. For instance, Sony Ericsson P1i would be able to use Sony Ericsson G700 application installer. Download one now and run in on your unit.

Here’s how it will look like on a P1i (using G700 Application as selected phone manufacturer – works perfectly fine)
Tips: Choose phones with similar features: P1i and G700 are touch screen smart phones. (Use * for left navigation and # for right navigation)
