Opera Mini 5 Beta 2

Write up by: Adrian JY Chow

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 has been realeased on 2 December 2009 and it has been tested so far to be stable. It has added few new features into it which of course, Opera Mini being the most popular mobile phone browser in the world has always taken speed into consideration. Now it compresses web pages up to 90% and this simply means faster downloading the content of the page and at the same time optimizing the data transfer.

Not only that, in this beta 2, there are still many new features like:

1. Full web in your palm

When visiting a Web page, Opera Mini displays the overview of the page and suggests where to begin your reading before you zoom in. Opera Mini also detects when you are on a Web page designed for a mobile phone and displays it optimally.

Page zoom – Control default text size on Web sites. Depending on your mobile phone screen size, often text can be too small or too large to be viewed easily. Control the default zoom level from 60% to 200% directly in Opera Mini; and now, you can even scroll the page with a scroller (if any on your device)

Speed Dial – Get your favorite Web page with just one click. Speed Dial is a set of visual bookmarks you see when you open a new tab, like a dashboard for your online life. To add a new page, simply click an empty dial, and Opera will make suggestions based on your browsing history and bookmarks.

Utilize the shortcuts re-implemented like those in Opera 4.0. Now you can view pages and access menu more easily. Just tap on # button on your keypad and you can access whole bunch of menus

2. Speed Optimization

The new settings interface which includes Download Manager and Search in Page.

Built for speed – The new Opera Mini lets you search for text within a Web page (tap on Settings), so you can get to the information you need even more quickly than before.

Download Manager – Manage downloads right from the browser. Pause and resume downloads to suit your needs.

3. Download Manager

4. On-Screen QWERT Keyboard (captures the input from device faster now)

The user interface has been designed for both touchscreen- and keypad-style mobile phones. With a touchscreen, you can enjoy even easier navigation with our new zooming and kinetic scrolling.

Adaptive zoom

On a touchscreen phone panning has become even easier with adaptive zoom. When panning quickly around a zoomed-in page the panning momentum creates a more intuitive and easier to-navigate experience.

Landscape mode

Browse in the way that is most comfortable to you. Landscape mode allows you to view Opera Mini 5 on your phone in landscape.

5. Opera Link

Synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial between your mobile phone and desktop computer.

All you need to is by going into the Setting > Enable Opera Link

You will be prompted to sign up / sign in. That’s it. Once sign in, a pop up will display a message stating "Your Browser Data has been Synchronized".

6. Password Manager

There is no more hassle with those hard-to-enter usernames and passwords. Opera Mini 5 will remember your credentials, and you can log on to your favorite Web sites with just a single click. The passwords are stored on your phone for your convenience.

7. Network Connection Review

If the connection (WiFi, 3G, GPRS, EDGE) is not active causing the page not to load properly, it will display a pop up requesting the user the review the connection.

In which it means to make sure the connected connection is Active and ready to browse. Unlike in Beta 1, it only stops and display the same page without any error message.

8. Upload

Upload is now much faster compared to the previous versions. And it is possible wherever you notice a "choose" button (also known as "browse" button in some other browsers). Uploading attachment via email is possible too, don’t have to worry to get this feature enable by downloading an un-signed version of it
